Last Tuesday was a rough day in our family. We lost one of our furry family members, Sammy. She had been acting funny ever since the couple game night we had, she was on/off acting weird all that week and then Tuesday morning she was up from 3-4:30am walking around all out of it and then finally laid down. At around 5 she started making weird noises and we found her having a seizure. Longest 30 seconds ever. Mike and I stayed with her and we discussed how this was probably the end for our dear sweet Sammy. We called the vet at 7 when they opened, got an appointment for 9. PawPaw came to watch kiddos and I canceled our plans for the day. She tried to get up at around 7, but just kept falling. So sad. Mike carried her to the car and then into the vet office. We talked with the vet and he just looked at her liver and said she has a liver tumor--he could feel it and showed me. He said that this was the end for her and we were making the right choice to put her down. Mike and I were a mess, it was so hard to say goodbye to our big Sams. She has always been such a great dog (even when she chewed on everything for 2 whole years!!!) She ate a whole entire garden hose and ate on the side of the house. She loved to play fetch with Mike and be around her "people." She always had to be in the same room as us. She loved the kids so much!! She loved waking up in the morning and going upstairs to see them. We have tons of video with her and the kids and she is always kissing on them. Even the day we brought Kate home from the hospital, Sammy loved her and gave her kisses! She was very afraid of storms!! Gram was watching the kids once and a storm came and Sammy was like on top of poor Gram!! She also hated the sound of plastic bags and the vacuum cleaner.
Our heart is still aching for our Sammy. She was a great dog for the 10 years we were blessed to have her.
The kids took her death pretty well. No tears, they just seemed matter of fact like "Sammy's dead." Kate says she misses her and that she is sad. We have had lots of fish deaths, so maybe that's why they are so cold about it.
We miss our brown eyed sweet Sammy. I keep wondering when I am going to stop looking for her or stop saying "girls" instead of just Trudy.
People have been asking how Trudy is doing without Sammy and she seems fine honestly. She acted weird the first two nights going to bed without Sammy but that's about it.
I still can't believe our Sammy is gone.
