Kate's Mother Day Out

On the day Alex was born, Kate had her first day at Mother's Day Out. She had her Meme and her Gram take her and she did great!! I was sooo sad to have missed this, I had some serious Mommy guilt!! But she seems to enjoy it so far! Mike was sad on her second day when he took her and she just told him "BYE" and didn't even look back!! When he picked her up, the teacher told Mike that she had never seen such a young kid read so many books!!

Here are pictures from her first day:

In the Hospital with Alex

Mike was with me most of Tuesday and Alex spent most of the day in the nursery, except when I was feeding him. I was really out of it most of the day and well, exhausted. I was throwing up ALOT and in pain!! Mike left that night to sleep at home and Alex stayed in the nursery, except for me to feed him. Wednesday I continued to rest and sleep and Mike came at about noon. Alex had his circumcision and did just fine. Mike and I hung out most of the day and then he went home to put Kate to bed and to relieve his Mom. I had my friends, Kelly and Lana come visit. Thursday morning, Mike took Kate to her first full day of Mothers Day Out and then came to pick us up to take us home.

Alex meeting the family and Kate

The family came by Tuesday morning to meet Alex. It was Kate, my parents, my sister and Mike's Mom.

IT's A . . . . . . .

BOY!!!

Mike and I are so proud to have our little boy, Alexander Mellon Abernethy!!!

It all started on Monday, September 6 (Labor Day) at about 9:30 in the morning when I starting leaking. I wasn't sure that was what was happening, but at around 1:30 I decided to call my doctor. Mike had just picked up his Mom from the airport, so we were lucky she was here to be with Kate since the nurse told us to go ahead into the hospital. Mike and I both thought that we might be coming right back home, but we grabbed the suitcase and off we went.

We arrived at the hospital at about 2:30 and checked into a triage room. I had a positive test for amniotic fluid and was a tight 2 cm dilated. We were then moved to L & D room 6 and my doctor was called (Dr Culter was on call). I was having irregular contractions that were about 4-5 minutes apart and I couldn't feel them. I couldn't believe that it was happening!!

By 5:00 I was still at 2 cm and had started to feel the contractions. Dr Culter was called and she said that if I hadn't progressed by 7:30 then to start Pitocin.

At 7:30 everything was the same so Pitocin was started at 8pm and I was really starting to feel the contractions! I had a big gush of fluid, which I thought was my water breaking (but it wasn't--I was just still leaking)

At 9:30 my epidural was put in. I was still at 2 cm dilated and I was feeling my contractions which were 3 minutes apart.

September 7 at 12:30 I am already 6 cm dilated.

At 1:30am I am 8 1/2 cm dilated so the nurse calls Dr Culter to come in! She also breaks my bag.

By 2:00 I am fully dilated and the nurse is telling me NOT TO PUSH! I was feeling painful contractions and wanted to PUSH!!! We were just waiting on Dr Culter.

Dr Culter arrives and I push for 3 contractions and Alex arrives at 2:16!! Mike and I are so excited to have our boy!! He had apgar scores of 8 & 9 and was 8 lbs, 1 oz and 21 inches long.

After delivering Alex, I had some problems!! I started to hemorrhage and the Dr had trouble getting out my placenta. Also, my uterus was not contracting as it should have been. This went on for about 30 minutes of the Doctor pushing on my uterus and scarping inside of my uterus. It was scary and painful. Anesthesia was called to give me more meds and the nurse gave me something to stop the bleeding. There was talk of taking me to the OR for a DNC. Thankfully, the bleeding slowed down and my uterus started to contract again. It was a long and painful 30-45 minutes!! Then I was able to breastfed Alex and then I started throwing up! What a mess. I was given an anti-nausea medication that made me feel drunk and then also a blood clotting medication.

Alex was taken to the nursery to have a bath and we moved to room 220 around 5:00am. The nurses were checking my uterus and my bleeding many times, so I was still awake. By 6am I was ready to go to sleep, but then my epidural wore off and I was in pain!!I was given oral pain meds and was impatient for them to work.

Alex had trouble warming up in the nursery before his bath and then after his bath he took a while to get his temperature back up. Finally at 8am we had him back in our room.

I had been up for over 24 hours by now and I was really exhausted. Our families and Kate came by to meet Alex. I don't think Kate really knew what to think about Alex. But she did give him a kiss!!

Most of Tuesday I tried to sleep and I was still throwing up off and on. The pain medication I was receiving was keeping my pain away (thankfully!!) Alex is great at nursing and like Kate, we had to work hard at waking him up to feed him. He stayed in the nursery most of the day so I could rest.

Wednesday I continued to rest and then Thursday we headed home.

All in all, if I hadn't had the complication after labor, it would have been a great labor experience.

Mike and I could not be happier with our little boy!

Mother's Day Out!

Kate will start her Mother's Day Out program next week! I am super excited for her and I hope that she loves it! We went to an open house last Thursday and she seemed to like the toys in her classroom and was just running around having too much fun! We saw a little boy screaming and holding on to his Mom for dear life and we thought Kate could not be more different than that! I think she is really going to enjoy MDO. I just worry about the whole nap thing. She really only naps about maybe 3 times a week now. She will play in her room for 2 hours and not cry, but really will only nap about 3 times a week. At MDO they are expected to nap while they are there--I worry that she won't nap and be a problem! But we will see!

She seems to know all of her letters now. She will get E and F confused sometimes and still has her own made up word for W. She also seems to know her numbers 1-10. We have started to work on colors and she can say yellow, purple, and pink, but everytime we ask her what color anything is--she says "Yellow"!! We will keep working on that! She has also started to response to the TV, like repeating things they say or doing the action she is being asked to do. She also has been picking up words/sounds in songs and will say them during the song. She has finally started to make animal sounds the last few weeks and is naming animals really well. I love the way she says Elephant. As I was saying earlier, she doesn't nap every day and well she started to be a bit destructive in her room! Also, we had to call the poison control for the first time last week since she climbed on her drawers to get to the top of her dresser and ate some Destine (diaper rash cream). Mike said the lady seemed like they get that call alot and told us not to worry that she just might have some diarrhea. So therefore, Kate's room is now pretty bare!! Her closet is overflowing with all her stuff!! I am about to take everything out of the drawers!!

Kate seems to have no idea how her life is about to change. Being the oldest myself, I sorta feel sorry for her! I know she will probably not remember being an only kid, but I just want to treasure each day with her since it will never be just her and me ever again!! Makes me sad . . .

Bath time now and then

Here is Kate in the bath last August:

Here she is Sunday night in the bath:

Saturday

On Saturday we headed to the park for a memorial for the sweet little girl, Peyton, that passed away after being bitten by a rattlesnake a few weeks ago. It was a beautiful morning and a great celebration of her 23 month life! The kids had a great time playing at the park and blowing bubbles up to Peyton! We will all miss Little Miss P!!

That afternoon we headed to the Mills Twins 2nd B-day party! I can't believe that Jack and Maddie are 2 already and Kate will be so soon!!

Here the 3 of them are from the Twins 1st birthday last year:

This is from their 2nd birthday this Saturday:

Wow-what a difference a year makes!

38 weeks!!

38 weeks and still at 1 cm!! My Doctor doesn't think anything is going to happen this week--but you never know! Unfortunately, I came down with a cold last week and ended up with fever on Wednesday night. We had trouble finding an Urgent Care Clinic that would take me, being so pregnant, but we finally did and I was given a Z-Pak. I think it was a sinus infection and I was doing sinus rinses like 3 times a day just to be able to breath! So much fun, let me tell you! But I am feeling better, thank goodness!! Also, I am still at a weight under 200 lbs, which makes me happy!! I have gained 40 lbs, which is the same I gained with Kate. I am hoping that I don't have the baby until at least after Labor Day--that is when Mike's Mom gets here to help us with Kate, but we will see.

Kate loves to give hugs!!

Kate has been big on giving hugs lately!! We were at Cassie's last week, also with another friend, Kelly and son Jackson, and Kate was giving them all hugs!! It was soo cute!! Unfortunately, my camera wasn't fast enough to get the hugs she was giving Jax and Jackson, but this is what I did get!!
